Actors, producers and distributors have
their ‘lucky theatres’ and it’s sentiments
that rule when it comes to deciding where to
screen their new movies. It is believed that
RTC Crossroads, which houses around 10-12
theatres, is the first choice..
Mahesh Babu’s film Pokiri is
slated for release on April 28 and Sudershan
35 mm is the team’s choice. According to a
unit member of the film, who wish to remain
unnamed, “We zeroed in on Sudershan because
all his earlier films, Murari, Okkadu and
Athadu, hit the 100-day benchmark when
screened there. It has proved to be lucky
for him time and again, so Sudershan will be
a natural choice for all Mahesh Babu films
in future. I didn’t want to take any risk by
breaking this unwritten rule.”
In fact, there is an understanding between
theatre owners and film producers when it
comes to these beliefs. according to sources, a prominent group of film
distributors in AP, “Producers usually make
demands for their lucky theatres. In fact,
most of them inform us in advance about
their future releases so that we can reserve
the theatres without any problem.”
And it’s not just the film fraternity that
is driven by these superstitions. Theatre
owners also get into this thought pattern
when they have one too many success stories
related to a particular actor or producer.
Says K. Jnaneswar, manager of Sudarshan
theatre, “The film that’s being screened
here currently is not doing all that well.
So, we are planning to screen Mahesh Babu’s
film Pokiri. All the three Mahesh Babu films
that were screened here went on to celebrate
their silver jubilees. If our theatre is
lucky for Mahesh, he is lucky for us.”
However, actors can’t always charm Lady
Luck. When Siddharth’s film Nuvvostanante
Nenoddantana completed 100 days in Shanti
Theatre, it was an obvious choice to screen
his second film Chukkallo Chandrudu there.
He was reported saying, “Shanti is a lucky
theatre for me.” However, despite all the
hype and lucky charms, the film was not a
commercial hit. To avoid any kind of bad
luck producers play safe by avoiding unlucky
theatres like plague.
